Certificate Options
In addition to the master's program MET offers two graduate level certificates consisting of five 3-credit courses, all of which are delivered online. The certificate program can be completed in as little as one year.
Certificate students must complete a minimum of two core courses and a maximum of 3 electives. See the requirements for each certificate listed below.
MET Graduate Certificate in Technology-Based Distributed Learning
The TBDL certificate is directed at anyone concerned with managing, designing or tutoring online or face-to-face technology-based courses for post-secondary or adult learners.
MET Graduate Certificate in Technology-Based Learning for Schools
The TBLS certificate is directed at anyone concerned with managing, designing or tutoring online or face-to-face technology-based courses for school-aged students.
Why take a Graduate Certificate?
Graduate certificates have several attractive features:
- They provide a focussed, compact credential for professionals who have specific needs, who are looking for an introduction to a new field, or who have some experience but are looking for upgrading and a credential.
- Certificates are appropriate for professionals who may already have a master's degree but who are looking for certification in a new field.
- Courses completed as part of the certificate program (up to a maximum of 15 credits) are fully transferable to the master's degree program at any time while completing the certificate program or after completion, provided that the total time between beginning the certificate and competing the masters degree does not exceed five years. Once accepted into the master's program, students are no longer eligible to obtain an MET certificate.
Certificate students have access to the same courses and study alongside students in the Master's program.
Students must complete a minimum of two core courses and a maximum of three electives in order to complete the certificate program, see below for specific course recommendations.
Please Note: MET Certificate students are not admitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and therefore:
Graduate Certificate in Technology-Based Distributed Learning (TBDL)
In order to complete the TBDL certificate program, students need to complete at least two of the following core courses:
- ETEC 500: Research Methodology in Education
- ETEC 510: Design of Technology Supported Learning Environments
- ETEC 511: Foundations of Educational Technology
- ETEC 512: Applications of Learning Theories to Instruction
In addition to the core courses, students can take no more than three of the following elective courses.
Electives of Particular Relevance to TBDL Certificate Students:
- ETEC 520: Planning and Managing Learning Technologies in Higher Education
- ETEC 522: The Business of E-Learning
Other Elective Options:
- ETEC 521: Indigeneity, Technology and Education
- ETEC 530: Constructivist Strategies for E-Learning
- ETEC 531: Curriculum Issues in Cultural and Media Studies
- ETEC 532: Technology in the Arts and Humanities Classroom
- ETEC 533: Technology in the Mathematics and Science Classroom
- ETEC 540: Text Technologies: The Changing Spaces of Reading and Writing
Graduate Certificate in Technology-Based Learning for Schools (TBLS)
In order to complete the TBLS certificate program, students need to complete at least two of the following core courses:
