Program Overview

Our Graduate Certificate of Educational Technology is designed to give you full flexibility. Choose from the same courses offered in the master’s program and study alongside degree program students.

This graduate certificate focuses on the latest advancements and tools in edtech, learning design and instructional development. It will equip you with the skills needed to create meaningful learning experiences based on the latest instructional design models.

You will gain practical experience and hands-on training in how to create effective learning materials for various delivery modes (face-to-face, blended, and online learning).

We take pride in our commitment to inclusivity, incorporating Indigenous knowledge and perspectives throughout our curriculum. Our program fosters a community-focused environment, encouraging collaboration and advancing positive change in our communities through educational technologies.

Program Structure

  • You must complete ETEC 500 and at least one other MET core course, plus three elective courses.
  • New students are accepted into the program three times per year in January, May, and September. Graduate certificate students typically complete their program in 1-2 years.
  • Up to 3 credits of graduate-level non-MET courses may be credited towards your graduate certificate. This requires approval from the MET Academic Advisor.

Graduate certificate students are not admitted to the UBC Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. Graduate certificate students therefore:

  • Have library privileges equivalent to those of undergraduate students.
  • Are not members of the Graduate Student Society.
  • Do not pay Capital Improvement Fund and Graduate Student Society fees.

Courses

Our online courses provide a well-rounded combination of practical experience and new technologies. They are grounded in research-based learning approaches.

Our courses focus on contemporary learning theory, effective e-learning material design, and leadership skills for managing learning technologies and organizational change.

They also explore the administrative, technological, and cultural implications and challenges of using learning technologies, including strategic planning, budgeting, and organizational culture.

Admissions Requirements

Applicants with Canadian or US Credentials:

  • A four-year bachelor’s degree from a UBC-recognized university (a master’s degree is also an acceptable admission credential, even if the preceding bachelor’s degree does not meet the four-year requirement).
  • B+ average (76% at UBC) in third- and fourth-year coursework.

Applicants with International Credentials:

Please check the UBC Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies website for admissions credentials by country.

We may extend a special offer of admission to a highly-qualified graduate applicant who does not quite meet the minimum academic requirements.

Candidates seeking special admission are encouraged to emphasize their relevant professional experience and potential for academic excellence in the Statement of Intent included with their application.

Relevant Professional Experience:

Successful applicants normally have a minimum of two years of relevant professional experience in “education,” broadly defined as the process of facilitating learning at any level and in any context.

Such experience may include teaching, facilitation of training, curriculum development, learning design, and related educational work. MET values professional experience in both formal school-based settings and in informal learning environments, where learning occurs outside of structured curriculum learning environments. Educational experience in areas such as healthcare, industry, law enforcement, music, professional sport, and other sectors is welcomed.

Preference is given to candidates who use educational technology in their workplaces or who intend to expand their practice to include educational technology.

Additional Requirements:

All applicants must:

  • Pay a non-refundable application fee.
  • Be able to speak, write, and read in English.
  • Have access to a computer and reliable Internet.
  • Have basic computer and Internet literacy.

Current tuition fees for ETEC courses for domestic and international students in the MET program and graduate certificate, based on year of admission, are listed in the UBC Calendar tuition fee section for Specialized Master’s Degrees.

Tuition payments can be made online, by mail, or through your Canadian financial institution. MET students are also assessed a small Capital Improvement Fund fee annually. See the UBC Calendar for more information.
