Important Information
Your application and all relevant documents (transcripts, references, etc.) must be submitted by the application deadline. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Admission Requirements
Please review the admission requirements for the Master of Educational Technology and the Graduate Certificate in Educational Technology to ensure you meet the admissions criteria for MET and UBC Graduate Studies.
In addition to meeting minimum academic criteria, all applicants must:
- Pay a non-refundable application fee,
- Be able to speak, write, and read in English,
- Have access to a computer and reliable Internet connectivity,
- Have basic computer and Internet literacy.
In addition, please be aware that successful applicants normally have a minimum of two years of professional experience in “education”, broadly defined as the process of facilitating learning at any level and in any context.
Such experience may include teaching, facilitation of training, curriculum development, learning design, and related educational work. MET values professional experience in both formal ‘school-based’ settings and in informal learning environments, where learning occurs outside of structured curriculum learning environments.
Educational experience in areas such as healthcare, industry, law enforcement, music, professional sport, and other sectors is welcomed.
Preference is given to candidates who use educational technology in their workplaces or who intend to expand their practice to include educational technology.
Required Documents
These are the documents that you must submit with your application:
- Transcripts from every post-secondary institution you have attended other than UBC,
- Three letters of reference,
- A written Statement of Intent of up to 500 words in which you outline your professional and scholarly goals and state how these align with the theme of this graduate program,
- English proficiency test results (if relevant),
- Current résumé/curriculum vitae.
An application fee will be charged and can be paid online with Visa or Mastercard.

More Details on Required Documents
Transcripts
Transcripts are required from each post-secondary institution you have attended. This requirement includes any institution where you took a course for a grade, even if the course(s) were transferred to another institution. If scanned, you must scan both front and back of each document. These documents will be used for the initial evaluation of your application.
NOTE: Grade sheets are not transcripts and will not be accepted in lieu of copies of official transcripts.
International transcripts must include a notation of the degree earned. If this is not on the transcript, you must provide an official degree certificate from the university as well as your transcript. Applicants should submit both official English translations (by the university) as well as original language transcripts and degree certificates. These transcripts must have been issued within two years of your application.
Letters of Reference
Applicants must submit three letters from individuals able to report on their academic abilities and qualifications. While at least one academic reference is preferred, it is not absolutely required. Work references that can speak to your initiative, intellectual capacity, and work ethic are welcome. For a reference document to be considered official, the document and the envelope’s seal must be signed by the referee.
Alternatively, references can now be submitted electronically in the following manner: When you submit your application, include the referee’s email address. This will generate an automatic email that contains a link to a site where your reference can enter his/her reference and then submit it. They can type as much as they want, despite the apparent size of the text box. This link will only be available when your application is submitted. If you plan on having your reference(s) submit their reference by mail, please leave the email address blank on the application.
Cover Letter with Statement of Intent
You must submit a written statement of up to 500 words outlining your professional and scholarly goals and how these align with the graduate certificate program.
English Proficiency Test Results
If you are applying from outside Canada and from a country in which English is not the primary language of instruction, you must provide results of an English language proficiency examination as part of your application. Tests must have been taken within the last 24 months at the time of the submission of your application. See English Proficiency Requirements on the Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies website.

Submit Your Application
Applications to both MET programs must be submitted online via the UBC Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies application system.
If you are applying to the degree program, search Master of Educational Technology to find the appropriate program. If you are applying to the graduate certificate, search Graduate Certificate in Educational Technology. Please ensure you are applying to the correct program.
In addition to applying online, the original copies of your transcripts and your letters of reference must also be received by the MET office by mail at:
