Dr. Sam McCready has been an integral part of the MET teaching team since 2022, bringing a rich background in history, media literacy, and game-based learning. With two degrees in history and a PhD from York University’s Communication and Culture program, his research focuses on how playful learning experiences, particularly through historical games, can enhance critical thinking and media literacy.
His academic journey includes leading participant-based studies exploring game design as a tool for developing analytical skills in post-secondary students. He has also collaborated on research projects examining spatial learning in Call of Duty, leadership in multiplayer online games, and the role of Minecraft in fostering 21st-century competencies in elementary education.
Dr. McCready has been teaching at the university level since 2018, across disciplines such as history, humanities, communications, and education. Since joining us in 2022, he has “fallen in love with the MET program and the opportunity it provides to innovate in teaching and learning”.
This summer, Dr. McCready will be teaching ETEC 510, ETEC 511, and ETEC 565T — a summer institute on the ethical and professional use of generative AI in education. He looks forward to supporting MET’s continued growth and helping students navigate the evolving intersections of technology, pedagogy, and learning.
Welcome, Dr. McCready!
