Admission Requirements

The following requirements apply to all candidates applying to the Master of Educational Technology program and the Graduate Certificate program:

Applicants with Canadian or US Credentials

  • A four-year bachelor’s degree from a UBC-recognized university (a master’s degree is also an acceptable admissions credential, even if the preceding bachelor’s degree does not meet the four-year requirement)
  • B+ average (76% at UBC) in third- and fourth-year coursework

Applicants with International Credentials

Please check the UBC Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies website for admissions credentials by country.

The Master of Educational Technology Program may extend a special offer of admission to a highly-qualified graduate applicant who does not quite meet the minimum academic requirements. Candidates seeking special admission are encouraged to emphasize their relevant professional experience and potential for academic excellence in the Statement of Intent included with their application.

Relevant Professional Experience

MET is a professional graduate program. Successful applicants normally have a minimum of two years of relevant professional experience in “education,” broadly defined as the process of facilitating learning at any level and in any context. Such experience may include teaching, facilitation of training, curriculum development, learning design, and related educational work. MET values professional experience in both formal ‘school-based’ settings and in informal learning environments, where learning occurs outside of structured curriculum learning environments. Educational experience in areas such as healthcare, industry, law enforcement, music, professional sport, and other sectors is welcomed.

In addition, preference is given to candidates who use educational technology in their workplaces or who intend to expand their practice to include educational technology. Applicants should demonstrate that they have used and are conversant with digital learning technologies relevant in their work.
