Dorothee Leesing, PhD

“I am a media studies researcher and educational technology manager at the UBC Department of Physical Therapy. My background spans journalism, music, film, publishing, and teaching, all of which inform my work in game studies, digital pedagogy, digital humanities, artificial intelligence, and urban studies. As an affiliate of the UBC Centre for Migration Studies, I explore these phenomena in a global context.

My diverse professional experiences—ranging from film sets and schools to classical music labels and feminist magazines—shape my research on knowledge acquisition and production. I investigate the dynamics of motivation, joy, but also stress, and resulting resilience in learning processes. At the core of my work is a critical reflection on privilege and its intersections with gender, generational wealth, age, and race.

I have been particularly interested in how the digital realm both reinforces and disrupts structures of privilege. This evolving landscape has added new layers to our understanding of learning processes, reshaping how knowledge is acquired and often exposing or challenging disparities tied to social inequalities. The MET program offers courses that are aligned with these resulting research questions I’m excited to be contributing to thought processes that are innovating digital learning processes.

My academic journey has taken me from the University of Münster in Germany to the University of Bergen in Norway, the University of Washington in Seattle, and finally to UBC in Vancouver—each stop serving not only as a hub for my research but also as a setting for some of the world’s most remarkable precipitation levels.”
