Rachel Horst, PhD

“I am a digital literacy scholar and educator with a PhD in Language and Literacy Education from The University of British Columbia. Before pursuing my doctoral degree, I spent a decade teaching at the secondary level, an experience that deeply informs my research and teaching. In my research, I explore how digital arts-based methods, futures literacies pedagogy, and critical (post)digital literacies can enrich teaching and learning, helping us navigate and thrive in an increasingly digitally saturated world.

I am committed to equitable, decolonizing, and relational approaches to technology and education, reimagining how we use, design, and engage with digital tools to create transformative learning experiences. My work draws on the provocations of posthumanism to explore critical and creative engagements with technology, with a particular focus on generative AI. I am especially interested in how these technologies can deepen creative practices, enable collaborative knowledge creation, and open new pathways for communication and expression.

Teaching in the MET Program is a genuine joy for me. As a graduate of the program myself, I deeply value the diverse and innovative courses the program offers. In my opinion, this is the most relevant and exciting field of study for our time! I’ve had the opportunity to teach ETEC 531, ETEC 565H, ETEC 530, and ETEC 565C. The most rewarding aspect of my teaching in this program is the thrill of working and learning with such talented students and colleagues, whose creativity, curiosity, and shared commitment continually push the boundaries of what is possible with educational technology.”
