Our graduate certificate program allows you to undertake study in this field without committing to a full master’s degree. As a graduate certificate student, you may select from the same range of courses offered to those in the full MET program, and you will study alongside students in the Master of Educational Technology program.
In order to complete a certificate, you must complete ETEC 500 and at least one other MET core course, plus three elective courses.
- New students are accepted into the graduate certificate program three times per year in January, May, and September.
- Graduate certificate students typically complete their program in 1-2 years.
- Up to 3 credits of non-MET courses may be credited towards your graduate certificate with approval of the MET Academic Advisor.
A Note About Student Status
Graduate certificate students are not admitted to the UBC Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.
Graduate certificate students therefore:
- have library privileges equivalent to those of undergraduate students (for information visit the UBC Library website)
- are not members of the Graduate Student Society
- do not pay Capital Improvement Fund and Graduate Student Society fees paid by Master’s degree students
Laddering Into the Master of Educational Technology Degree Program
Graduate certificate students may choose to ladder (transfer) their courses into the MET program and continue on to complete the full Master of Educational Technology degree. Graduate certificate credits (up to a maximum of 15) are fully transferable to the Master of Educational Technology degree program at any time while completing the graduate certificate program, provided that the total time between beginning the graduate certificate and completing the Master of Educational Technology degree does not exceed five years.
You may apply to transfer at any time during your graduate certificate studies, but please keep in mind that you will not be eligible to receive a graduate certificate once you have moved into the Master of Educational Technology program. While it is possible for you to take more than five courses as a graduate certificate student, the maximum number of courses you can ladder into the MET is five.
To transfer to the Master of Educational Technology degree program, you must complete an application to the degree program using the UBC Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies online application system — see How to Apply: Master of Educational Technology (MET) Degree for details. You do not need to re-submit documentation.
